What is Thyroid Cancer?

The cancer that occurs in the cells of the thyroid is called as thyroid cancer. Thyroid produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.

Symptoms

Stages

Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer -- Patients Under Age 45

  • Stage I: The tumor may have spread to nearby tissues or nearby lymph nodes. But not to other parts of the body.
  • Stage II: Cancer may have spread to your lymph nodes

Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer -- Patients Age 45 and Older

  • Stage I: Cancer is in thyroid gland which measures about 2 centimeters or smaller.
  • Stage II: The tumor is more than 2 centimeters but less than 4 centimeters.
  • Stage III: The tumor is larger than 4 centimeters and has spread to tissues and reached nearby lymph nodes.

Papillary and Follicular Thyroid Cancer, Stage IV

In stage IV, cancer has spread.

  • Stage IVA: The cancer has spread beyond thyroid and it affects your larynx, esophagus or trachea.
  • Stage IVB: The tumor has grown toward your spine or into nearby large blood vessels, like the carotid arteries.
  • Stage IVC: The cancer has spread beyond the thyroid, and to distant sites of the body. It may be in your lungs, bones, and lymph nodes.

Medullary Thyroid Cancer

  • Stage I: The tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller
  • Stage II: Larger than 2 centimeters, found only in your thyroid and not spread to lymph nodes.
  • Stage III: It may be smaller or larger than 2 centimeters and may also be in the tissues beyond your thyroid. The cancer is now in the lymph nodes near your voice box and windpipe.
  • Stage IV: Cancer has spread to distant sites in your body.

Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer

  • Stage IVA: Cancer is in your thyroid.
  • Stage IV: It has spread beyond your thyroid. It may be in your lymph nodes.
  • Stage IVC: It has spread to other areas of your body such as your lungs and bones. It may also be in your lymph nodes.

Treatment
